ABSTRACT

Unprecedented mobility restrictions due to COVID-19 have frozen the adventure travel and tourism industry. These restrictions have forced many to embrace 'hyperlocal' approaches to adventure and provided an opportunity to reimagine our adventure travel philosophies and practices. Despite claims that traditional adventure travel could address some of the "world's most pressing challenges", it has largely failed to realize its potential to provide a range of social, economic, and environmental benefits. Conversely, microadventure, which espouses adventures in nearby nature that are low-carbon and human-scaled, is an enticing alternative for both current and post-pandemic conditions. This essay first critiques pre-pandemic adventure travel and describes the hazards of this approach in age of COVID-19. It then explores creative 'lockdown' microadventures;envisions what post-pandemic adventure may look like;and explains why we not only need to embrace microadventures in a post-pandemic world, but also why we may prefer them to traditional adventure travel. ABSTRACT

This study examined the online search behavior of international students and the impacts of social media content on their intention to purchase adventure tourism products during the COVID-19 pandemic. Semi-structured in-depth interviews were conducted with 12 international students in Auckland, New Zealand. The data collected were analysed using a qualitative thematic analysis approach. The findings demonstrate the importance of adventure tourism organizations having a comprehensive understanding of tourist perceptions and search behaviors on social media for information related to purchase intention. Both Firm-Generated Content and User-Generated Content were found to be effective and convincing with popular sources of both types of content on Instagram, Facebook, YouTube and TripAdvisor, as well as other more specific content and platforms directly targeting Chinese tourists. The study demonstrates how changes in customer behavior including how international tourists search for information on social media affected their intent to purchase. This highlights the importance of social media when marketing adventure tourism destinations including destinations in New Zealand. Management implications The research findings further highlight the importance of social media in the era of COVID-19 with increased use and reliance of content on social media platforms produced by firms and users. Therefore, adventure tourism marketers need to formulate new social media marketing strategies to trigger purchase intentions in accordance with the preferences of the target audiences and their own business objectives.

ABSTRACT

Existing literature in the field of sustainable tourism highlights a number of barriers that impede the implementation of practices in this area. However, few studies have addressed the case of adventure tourism. Adopting a case study approach, this paper discusses a number of drivers of success identified by adventure tourism enterprise owners in Basque Country to contribute to the implementation of sustainable tourism practices. Adventure tourism has important social, economic, and environmental impacts on sustainability. The study focuses on learning how sustainable practices have changed in these companies because of the COVID-19 crisis. © 2022 Universidad de Murcia. All rights reserved.

ABSTRACT

Managing Crises in Tourism: Resilience Strategies from the Caribbean presents a timely and relevant exploration on what has grown to become a critical economic issue for Small Island Developing States (SIDS) that are highly tourism dependent. SIDS are known to face exposures to crises, including natural disasters and economic distress. More concerning, however, are the resource constraints that limit recovery when SIDS face said crises. The current text explores this resilience capacity constraint and its consequences. In addition to the resource capacity constraint, tourism dependent SIDS are further faced with significant economic recovery limitations when crisis impact disrupts the tourism sector. The COVID-19 pandemic presents a noteworthy example.

India is a country with diversity. It is the gift of nature wherein different rivers, mountains, hill stations, forts, caves, historical places are in the country. The young generation, use of technology, expert guidance, safety tools have paved the ways to adventure tourism not only in India but also in the world. The ‘adventure tourism’ is a niche form of tourism which includes deep exploration and extensive travelling to far-flung areas. It is based on the principle of ‘expect the unexpected.’ This is because it is closely association with greater risk as compared to other kinds of tourism. Some of the best examples could be rock climbing, mountaineering expedition, trekking, river rafting, Scuba diving etc. The present study is a review article which examines the different trends, challenges, opportunities, and prospects of adventure tourism in India. The systematic literature review method is applied in this regard. The author has used “Indian Tourism”, “Adventure Tourism”, “Adventure Sports” “Trekking”, “Rock Climbing”, “River Rafting”, “Mountaineering” and other relevant keywords are used to search the existing literature. ABSTRACT

Purpose>In an adventure tourism context (i.e. sky diving, bungee jumping) the effect of the absence or presence of a travel companion;companion relative ability (i.e. perception of a companion’s possessed resources useful for the achievement of travel goals);and tourist gender on the impact of companion relative ability on tourists’ satisfaction and subjective well-being is examined. This paper aims to investigate the mediating role of satisfaction that combines companion relative ability, tourist gender, tourist satisfaction and subjective well-being.Design/methodology/approach>This research uses three situational experiments. A one-factor between-subjects experimental design was used for Study 1. Studies 2 and 3 used a one-factor between-subjects and a 2 × 3 factorial between-subjects design. Participants included tourists visiting a national park in China assigned to scenarios using an anonymous intercept approach and an online survey.Findings>Having a companion with greater/comparable relative ability produces a greater effect on tourist satisfaction and subjective well-being than having a companion with lower relative ability. Furthermore, the perceived relative ability of a travel companion results in a stronger positive effect on tourist satisfaction and subjective well-being for female tourists. Meanwhile, satisfaction fully mediates the impact of the interaction between companion relative ability and tourist gender on subjective well-being.Originality/value>The current research validates the companion effect on adventure tourists’ satisfaction and subjective well-being. An additional contribution is an investigation into the effect of companion relative ability. The study is the only one the authors are aware of that examines the moderating role of tourist gender on the effect of companion relative ability on tourist satisfaction and subjective well-being and identifies the mechanism that combines companion relative ability, tourist gender, tourist satisfaction and subjective well-being.
